Swell Hair: DIY Haircolor Tips

I used to be a hairdresser. I loved the job, but quit working in a salon once I had children. I've continued to do hair since that time, haircuts for friends and family, also doing the occasional coloring process. I love to use color.

Yesterday, I colored my daughter, Bay's hair. She has gone through a few changes in the last 6 months. First, I took her medium brown hair to a champagne blonde. She enjoyed that for a little while, then she asked if I'd put some of the dark back in with lowlights. At the same time, I added some even lighter highlights. It was a fun project and her hair turned out great, but she grew bored and wanted to go back to dark.  Here's a photo of her freshly colored hair (she's with her boyfriend, PJ).

It's best to have a professional do your color work if you are going for an extreme change. Choosing the right shade can be tricky and everybody has some sort of color horror story, but doing something simple like a highlight, going a shade darker or lighter, or gray coverage can be done with a kit from the store. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when coloring your own hair at home.

*Make sure you have enough color. If you are coloring your entire head and your hair is shoulder-length or longer, purchase more than one kit. The only way to get even coverage is to have enough product.

*Don't scrub your scalp with shampoo before applying haircolor. The chemicals in the color can irritate your skin. Applying color to dirty hair is fine, just make sure you've combed the tangles out first, for ease in application.

*Start in the front. Apply to hairline, (use a towel or tissue to remove the tint from your skin), then move to the top. In order to get a uniform color, I do front, top from middle to right ear, then middle to left ear. I follow with the crown, then the nape. Move quickly.

*After application, use your fingers to lightly move color through the hair. Use a wide-tooth comb to work it through long hair ends, gently.

*If you do have stains on your face, apply a bit of shampoo and rub it into the tint, then wipe off. There was this saying back when I was in beauty school, "Tint removes tint." It attracts the color and helps to pull it off your skin.

*When you are finished processing, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, and then rinse again. Shampoo, rinse, then apply a deep conditioner. Treat your hair gently. Use a wide-toothed comb when wet, let your hair dry naturally when possible.

*If your shine fades, use a clear glossing product to brighten the shine. Natural Instincts by Clairol makes a good one, plus their product smoothes the cuticle and makes your hair appear healthier.

Swell Style: Cruise Style

I'm going to be a contributing writer over at Tom Cruise Watch a few times a week, covering Cruise Style. Katie and Suri are stylish ladies, so this will be a lot of fun. In addition, I can also cover Tom, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Connor, and Isabella Cruise. (Look for a Nicole post later in the week).

Katie Holmes and Suri Hang out on Set with Channing Tatum

My first post was on Katie and Suri's matching girl-next-door straight, side-part hairdos. Cute girls! Here's an excerpt:

You can recreate this simple, simple style yourself. Wash, towel-dry, then apply a serum like Eufora International's Beautifying Serum, then blow-dry with a large brush. Smooth ends with a straight iron, then spritz with their Illuminating Shine Spray.

Swell Style: Magical Sea Glass Treasures

One of my favorite Etsy shops, GhostShip, is running a great Mother's Day promotion. From now until May 9, 2010, you can get a free genuine Freshwater Pearl pendant with every purchase. How cool is that?

GhostShip offers beautiful, handmade jewelry made from sea glass. These pieces are wonderful - the sea glass has a sort of magical quality to it. It's spent decades rolling around the ocean floor - sharp glass becoming smooth and opaque. I have a couple pieces of GhostShip jewelry of my own - a pair of earrings and a locket-style pendant. Here are a few pieces for you to consider for Mom or for yourself...

Jump In the Water Is Fine

Swell Skin & Swell Savings

Youth Corridor is an anti-aging skin care line developed by Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Gerald Imber. The idea behind the product line name is that "The Youth Corridor is that part of adult life when one looks one's healthy, youthful best." With proper maintenance, it's possible to extend the length of this time period.

The basic Youth Corridor philosophy is:

*Prevention
*Maintenance
*Correction

"The centerpiece of our product line is Youth Corridor Antioxidant Boost, a unique serum that incorporates the natural antioxidant melatonin along with high concentrations of vitamins C and E. This combination has been shown to dramatically increase the antioxidant properties of vitamins C and E alone, and no other product offers this scientific advantage."

I am a firm believer in the power of proper skin care. I use a combination of sunscreen, serums, eye cream, soap-free facial cleanser, and moisturizer on a daily basis and the feedback that I get from friends and family is that my complexion does not show my age. (I'm 43).

I'm lucky - I get to try a lot of wonderful products for free in my line of work (the best part of my job!!!). I can't give you something free, but I can save you a little money. Youth Corridor is allowing me to offer Girl Looks Swell readers a 25% discount on their Soothe & Defend Moisturizer with SPF 30 and their Antioxidant Boost Skin Serum.

To get your 25% discount, simply use the promo code YCSUN at checkout.

Swell Style: Dressing Up Zebra Style

I really like a zebra-print dress. Londyn, of BlogFashion used to wear one that was so cute. It had short sleeves, a wrap-look (hard to tell for sure in the photo), and it hit above the knee. I've been looking for something similar for the longest time - number one on my Wish List.

Big Beautyful Mess is following Lucky's Month of Outfits for April and one of the items is a zebra print dress. It's different from Londyn's with a full, relaxed shape, shorter skirt, and full, draping sleeves.
I did a little looking around and here are a few of the zebra print dresses that I found this afternoon......

This dress is described as having a "leaf print," but it has a zebra look to me. It's navy and pink, made with a combo of Rayon/Spandex, a close fit, and a short skirt. Very cute, but not something that I'd be likely to wear, but if you've got the legs, go for it.

Leaf Knit Dress
$15.80 at Forever 21

This dress, by Michael Kors has a more forgiving cut to it. It's a scoopneck tank dress made from a combo of polyester/spandex, and it's got pocked. It has a solid black band at the waist.

Michael Kors Zebra-Print Tank Dress
$89.50 at Dillards

If I had a larger dress budget, this is the one I'd go for.... A silk dress by Temperley London. It's black and champagne in color with a v-neck and elbow length sleeves. Good gracious! This is one beautiful dress. I think I'm going to buy a lottery ticket tomorrow - I want that dress!

Swell Style: Vintage Styles For Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, lets do a little vintage shopping over at Etsy.....

I'm not sure how "vintage" this is, but it sure is cute - a blue leather clutch purse. It's 9 inches in width and 5 inches tall. The seller, the 100 Percent shop, says that it is in "perfect" condition.

Vintage Navy Clutch
$10 at 100 Percent

Fruit Salad Vintage doesn't have a description for this dress up yet, but it's so cute, I can't pass it up. Contact the seller for full details.

Vintage 50s Cotton Candy Cloud Dress
$42 at Fruit Salad Vintage

Go green...bright, Spring-green with this 70s era vintage sundress. It features girly pink polka dots and a ruffle hem. No size is given and the measurements given were taken when dress was "flat." I'm assuming that means we double them for the full measurements, so a 38 inch bust, 28-32 inch waist, etc. A medium-large maybe? Contact the seller for more details.

Vintage 70s Green Polka Dot Dress
$36 at Dollyrocker Vintage

Dollyrocker has some really cute things. Click here to see a green gingham check dress or a Mexican embroidered peasant dress. And don't forget to enter my Bioethique Organic Eye Cream giveway!

Swell Skin Care: Bioéthique Organic Cosmetics Giveaway

Go Green........with your skin care routine. Bioéthique cosmetics are certified organic by Nature et Progrès, which is Europe's strictest organic certification agency. The plants used in Bioéthique products are cultivated away from polluted areas, harvested when at their peak, and then processed with a method called bio-extraction.

This technology allows us to employ much higher concentrations of each selected botanical ingredient, thereby resulting in a product that is highly effective in visibly repairing damage to skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and visibly firming and toning the skin.

I had the opportunity to sample some of the Bioéthique skin care products for Gadabout Media's Beauty section. (Have I mentioned before how much I love that part of my job??)  The products are wonderful. They absorb quickly and leave the skin feeling incredibly smooth and silky.

Bioéthique's Eye Cream is made with a variety of botanical oils including: Chamomile Extract, Extra Virgin Sunflower Oil, Europaea-stearyl-ester, Extra Virgin Evening Primrose Oil, Rose Geranium Essential Oil, Lavender Essential Oil. It's rich in anti-oxidants and works to effectively firm and smooth the under eye area. Would you like to try it? Good, because Bioéthique is allowing me to give away one 30 ml bottle. WooHoo!

To enter the giveaway, please leave me a comment telling me one of your favorite beauty secrets. Make sure that it's a secret you'd like to share, because I plan to use the comments in an upcoming post. I will announce the random winner next week. Good luck!

Jones Wear V-Neck - Magenta

Swell Fitness: Britney Spears and Her Candies Photos

Yesterday, I was clicking through some celebrity news and I saw the headline that had to do with Before and After shots of Britney Spear's new Candies promotional photos. Well, I'm a goofy Britney Spears fan, so I skipped over to Celebslam to see what they were talking about.

Celebslam has a .gif photo of Britney in a pink swimsuit with both a fuller and thinner version blinking back and forth. The before shot shows Britney with thicker legs and the tiniest shadows of possible cellulite.

In addition to this photo, there's a shot of Britney in a yellow swimsuit here. This shot, I don't know if it's a before or an after, it shows Britney with a little rounded tummy. I hope it's the shot they use. I feel that by altering photos that show the true shape of her body, a body most of us would love to have, that Candies is missing out on a great opportunity here. Why not give girls a more realistic view of what a healthy woman's body is supposed to look like?  I, for one, would feel more comfortable supporting a company like that.

Why is the world so set on trying to make Britney Spears out to be an overweight person? She is a girl with curves and muscular legs. Honestly, her shape is the one that I think of as my goal. I want those strong legs - I'm a runner, I appreciate some muscle. You can see what I mean in the photo below.

Britney Spears Loves Her Orange Soda?

I wish that someone, somewhere would stop saying, "We should change this," and actually CHANGE it. Real women have a bit of cellulite. Nobody loves their cellulite, but what if we shine a little light on it and move on? Make it a normal part of an ad campaign because it's a normal part of a woman's body.

Another request, how about more shots with the cute mohawk man, too. He's purdy.

What do you think of the Britney photo "controversy"?

Swell Style: 5 Prom Dresses

Are you in the market for a prom dress? Forever 21 has a great selection of dresses under $43. Seriously. Two dresses cost $42.80 and the rest are about $10-$20 less. In fact, you can one for only $13.50. This leaves you plenty of room to splurge on shoes.

Silk Organza Party Dress
$42.80

This strapless number has a shell made of silk with a black lace overlay. It has boning in the bodice, to help with a secure fit, a hidden back zipper, and black waist tie. Black shoes are a safe bet for this dress, but I'd go with silver or even a bright solid like red or yellow for a bold look.

Robust Front Sheen Dress
$29.80

This dress has so many cute details. I love the ruffled front and the blush pink color that works so well with so many skin tones. The bubble hemline has a bit of mesh to give it shape and the fabric belt is removable, which gives you more style options.

Peplum Pleated Dress
$29.80

This strapless dress is great for fit for petite girls. The bust has slight padding, boning in the bodice, and a pleated design. The peplum is cute and I like the way it comes down to a slight point in the front, draws the eye along - perfect for hiding a little tummy. This dress is available in navy or red. It's designed in a smart, but simple style which gives you the perfect opportunity to really play it up with jewelry.

Satin Bustier Dress
$13.50

This is the $13.50 dress. Can you believe it? So cute with the bustier styling. It can be worn with straps or go strapless. The cups have padding and the inside of the dress is coated with silicone to prevent it from shifting and/or slipping. This is your classic bombshell dress - looks best accessorized with a confident smile. Avoid anything overly ornamental in a necklace. Let the lines of the dress shine.

Strapless Jersey Dress
$22.80

Faith 21, the plus size line available at Forever 21 has a couple of cute prom options. I wish they had more, but this is all they have for now. I've noticed that they add to their Faith 21 line frequently, so check back each week. This dress is a soft and swingy jeresy with an empire waistline and a strapless bodice.

Swell Skin: Olay Offers $20 Rebate

Good skin care is a big thing with me. I have the opportunity to try all kinds of products, so I have a good idea of what works and what does not. For example, the best night cream I've used is AVON's Reversalist. I've used plenty of $60-$90 creams and it's the AVON that works best.

Another good product is Olay Regenerist line. It's both affordable and effective. Right now Olay is offering a $20 rebate when consumers spend $50 on Olay facial care products. The rebate is available online, you can click here to download it.

The rebate is good until May 9, 2010 and it needs to be postmarked by May 21, 2010. It is not limited to the Regenerist line. It also includes favorites like the Total Effects and Definity line. To find out which line will give you the best results, click here for a consultation.

Swell Style: Handmade Accessories From Etsy

One of my favorite places to shop is Etsy. I love the handmade scarves or the jewelry made with recycled watch parts or sea glass, or the perfume made from essential oils that no one else is wearing. I like the idea that each item is made by hand with care.

Here's an example, a beautiful silk scarf made with soft merino wool and natural silk. I love the soft colors, they'll go great with the grays and khaki seperates that are going to be everywhere this Spring.

Nuno Felted Scarf - Spring Wind
$69 - Jane Bo Felt

Here's another piece that would go great with those khaki and gray neutrals. A pop of color at your waist. This cute little buckle measures 2 7/8 inches by 2 1/4 inches and works with belts that measure a half to a full inch in width.

Dandelion Belt Buckle
$28 - Anomaly Design

Do you watch that show Glee? My daughter and I love it and I know she'd love this Glee themed keychain with one of her favorite characters, Kurt, on it. (My favorite episode of the first season was the Kurt-centric that featured a whole lot of Beyonce's "Single Ladies.")

$7.99 - Straight Jacket Fun

Swell Makeup & Smell: Kim Kardashian Gift Set From Sephora

My youngest daughter loves to watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Me, not so much, but I have to admit that I love Kim Kardashian's style and makeup. She is a gorgeous lady and she really knows how to create the perfect smoky eye look.

Photo by: LVP/starmaxinc.com 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 2/27/10 Kim Kardashian at a promotio

Not that long ago, I got a chance to sample her Kim Kardashian Eau de Parfum for review. It's nice and not at all what I expected. I expected sexy, because that's what her image projects, but it's more of a feminine Floral with a strong note of Gardenia. My daughter, Bailey, uses it every day and the last time we were in 7-11, the clerk said, "Oh, your smell is good." I said, "It's Kim Kardashian," and he answered, "No. It is her." Ha!

Sephora has a new Kim Kardashian Gift Set available at Sephora. For a limited time, you can get all you need to create her "signature look" for only $55.

Wear luscious nude lips, sultry smoky eyes, flushed cheeks, and a voluptuous scent to channel Kim Kardashian's coveted sexiness. A chic, mirrored compact holds your must-have eye, lip, and cheek colors, plus applicators for on-the-go glamour. A set of simple instructions walk you through Kim's tips: "How I create my signature look!" Add a touch of fragrance and get ready to be downright irresistible.

The kit includes a 1 oz Eau de Parfum, 2 shades of lip gloss, 1 cheek color, and 3 shades of eyeshadow.

Kim Kardashian fragrance notes: Mandarin, Honey Suckle, Orange Blossom, Pink Jasmine, Tuberose, Sensual Spice, Lush Gardenia, Jacaranda Wood, Tonka Bean, Vanilla Orchid, Sexy Musk, Creamy Sandalwood

Swell Guys: AXE's New Twist & Rise Lines

Personal hygiene products for men have come a long way in the past few years. AXE and Old Spice, in particular have gone from being something your dad used to wear (Old Spice) or something only a teenage boy could love (AXE) to products that are built in the same way as a high-end men's fragrance.

An example of this would be AXE's new Twist fragrance products. The Twist line opens with fresh Lime and Citrus notes, then deepens in time with base notes of Cedar and Sandalwood. The Rise line is made with citrus notes that are meant to "conquer morning grogginess." The body wash contains minerals from the Himalayan moutains that are "uplifting.". Both the Twist and Rise lines are super-reasonably priced and include Deodorant, Deodorant Sprays ($4.99), and Shower Gels ($3.99).

AXE sent me both of the new lines to sample for review. I found both to smell very refreshing, but my favorite AXE fragrance is still the Instinct scent (Smoky/Woody, very nice). Max, my oldest son (19) is wearing the Rise line and my daughter's boyfriend, PJ, likes the Twis (PJ's Twist quote, "Fresh.").  I'm not sure if the new fragrances wake the guys up, but they sure do smell good.

For more AXE info visit the AXE Effect website.
